Prom Edition: Makeup Tips From the Pros

In this week's Prom Edition, find out the hottest Prom makeup styles and the essentials for your emergency makeup kit. We interviewed the beauty pros at Salon West and Midori Salon and Spa.

From hair styles to prom dresses, we’re covering everything you need for Prom. As you get ready for the big night, your makeup is the finishing touch. Do you want a look that's natural or smoky? Do you want glittery shadow? Should your shadow match your dress?

We discovered the hottest prom makeup styles and beauty tips with beauticians Maddy Erbe, from Salon West, and Amber Holland, from Midori Salon and Spa.

Before Your Appointment

Many teens are getting their hair styled and makeup applied at the same salon. Expect about an hour and a half to get your total look. Arrive to your appointment with a fresh, clean face.

“It’s good to exfoliate before you come in and [wear] no makeup,” Erbe said.

Appointment Day

The beautician will consult with you about your skin type to determine the best type of makeup and coverage. If you have blemishes or pimples, you can hide those with concealers.

You’ll also talk about the look you want to achieve, whether that’s a minimal, natural look or something glitzy. You’ll want your makeup to match or complement the color of your prom dress.

“Many girls bring their dresses in … or bring a picture of their dress, so we can match their look,” Erbe said.

Start With A Good Foundation

Salon West uses Jane Iredale mineral makeup, which provides a combination of color and skin care benefits. The line provides several foundations, such as Purepressed Base, Liquid Minerals and Dream Tint.

“Our foundations don’t include talcs or oils. It [Purepressed Base] has aloe vera, an SPF 20 and also is sweatproof, which is great for girls who are dancing all night at prom,” Erbe said.

Erbe recommends Dream Tints.

“It includes anti-aging ingredients, which tightens and firms the skin. That’s always good,” she said.

The Eyes Have It All

Ditch the glitter eye shadow for matte finishes. Shadows can have a hint of shimmer, but you shouldn’t use sparkles or shiny colors.

“Purple is a hot color. To make your eyes pop, try a purple [eyeliner], which is a popular color for dresses right now,” Erbe said.

Erbe suggests Mystikol, a shadow pencil, with one side for shadow and the other for eyeliner. Use the eye shadow all over your eye lid, or to brighten your eyes, apply a dot on the inner eye and under the brow bone and blend it with a brush.

One of the most popular looks is smoky eyes with red lips. The secret to getting the look is to apply your shadow in layers, rather than starting dark and trying to minimize the color.

Erbe suggests Eye Steppers, a compact of five eye shadows based on the color of your eye.

For blue eyes, the goBlue compact includes oyster, rosy and taupe, swiss chocolate and smoke.

The goGreen colors include allure, iris and sepia, slate and grape.

For blue and green eyes, Erbe recommends staying away from greens and using browns or purples to make your eye color stand out.

The goBrown compact includes sea green, blue sky and tan, forest and licorice.

“Girls with brown eyes are lucky. Every color looks good,” Erbe said.

Long Lush Lashes

You have a few options on getting full lashes. Some salons, like Salon West, offer permanent lash extensions.

However, the staff didn’t recommend this option for teens because of the expense, which can be hundreds for the initial extensions and then approximately $60 for up-keep.

An alternative would be the temporary extensions offered at Midori Salon and Spa. You can get a full set for $85 and a fill in set for $55.

Another option is to get your lashes tinted, which can last four to six weeks. It’s also less expensive, costing $15 at each salon.

Sun-kissed Glow

“All the girls want that bronzed, sun-kissed look,” Erbe said.

She recommends their product, So-Bronze, which is applied to cheeks, nose, chin and forehead for a “natural sun-kissed glow”.

You can also apply a self-tanner or get a spray tan. Salon West offers a self-tanner, and both Midori Salon and Spa and Captive Rays (a tanning salon) offer spray tanning.

“If you’re going to spray tan, do it the week before [prom],” Holland suggested.

Not only will your color be more even, spray tans have a slight odor, which you won’t want on prom night.

Glossy Lips

If any part of you should shine, it should be your lips. Glosses are huge right now. The most popular colors are hot pinks, reds and corals.

The bright, glossy look is popular, and according to Erbe, is reminiscent of “the 20’s classic look”.

For color staying power with shine, she recommends Lip Fixation, a combination lip stain and gloss.

“Apply the stain first and wait two minutes, then apply the gloss. The color will last four to six hours. You’ll only need to apply gloss, after you eat or drink,” Erbe said.

For a natural look, Erbe recommends Just Kisssed.

“Nude lips are popular too. It [Just Kissed] is more of a tint, with cinnamon extracts to pump up the lip,” she said.

Ready For Your Closeup?

If you’re going to be on television or filmed, Erbe recommends their new HD Modifying powders. It makes your skin look smoother and refines your pores.

“You sweep this on and it minimizes your pores. Since many things are recorded in HD, this eliminates the fear of [bigger pores on camera]. You don’t have to reapply it. One time, and you’re good for the night,” she said.

Be Prepared

"If you get your makeup done, buy the lipstick, so you have it to apply later in the night," says Holland.

She also recommends teens prepare a small emergency, makeup kit.

  • Trial size hairspray
  • Safety pin
  • Bobby pins
  • Lipstick
  • Compact or translucent powder
  • Rice papers (to reduce shine)
