POLL: Most Dangerous Road in Largo for Pedestrians
Which road in Largo is the most challenging for pedestrian safety? What would make it better?
As many residents are aware, Largo had another pedestrian fatality recently.
A Largo woman crossing East Bay Drive was hit and killed on Sept. 7. The pedestrian walked against the pedestrian signal at the intersection of Fulton Street and East Bay Drive around 11:46 p.m., according to authorities.
Pedestrian fatalities are apparently not isolated incidents in Largo. In July, a pedestrian crossing Seminole Boulevard at 110th Avenue North was hit and killed when he walked into the path of a Ford Taurus.
Earlier this year, there were three pedestrian fatalities in three weeks. The pedestrians were not in crosswalks, according to authorities.
Largo continues to work with special grant funds to curb this unsettling trend with an education and enforcement program focused on Missouri Avenue, East Bay Drive and Ulmerton Road.
Are there certain roads or intersections in Largo that you feel are dangerous for pedestrians? If so, what can be done to improve them?

The traffic lights on the south side of Walsingham Road in the Indian Rocks Beach shopping area don't light up green to indicate that pedestrians can cross.

When you have a combination of bad drivers and pedestrians that cross at inappropriate places or against the "walk" sign there isn't much you can do except hope they wise up and pay more attention to their driving instead of talking or texting. Same goes for the pedestrians. Get off your phones and pay ATTENTION!!

J Jensen said it best. Consider crossing the road a Darwin test. My dog would look both ways and cross safely and she was a dog. We need humans that are at least as smart as a dog. It's first grade citizenship-- look both ways and cross only when there are no cars coming. Government cannot create intelligence by legislative fiat and it is wrong to enable stupidity. Walkers need to take responsibility for themselves and not rely on a nanny stae to hold their hands and make the cars stop just for them.

It is also good government and the use of common sense to provide at least some form of protection. Pedestrians must use common sense when crossing but when you say when there are no cars coming, well, one might get old trying to cross a street.
Lets face it. There are a lot of drivers out there who should not be driving, and I hate to say it, a lot of the older crowd. I am 77 now and gave my license at 70 and I now sleep better for it. No accidents to worry about due to age factor. Yes! The government has a responsibility for our safety no different has the responsibility
to be careful. It is a two way street

To add to what J Jensen said, IF YOU ARE DRUNK OR HIGH you are at greater risk for stepping out in front of a car. PAY ATTENTION!

This is not new news. This has been this way for a long time. And of course the blame game is being played again. People are not using crosswalks. Pinellas County
made an issue of this. Crossing in the dark, not using crosswalks. What crosswalks? Get off a PSTA bus and one may have to walk 4 - 5 blocks to get to a crosswalk, cross the street, then walk 4-5 blocks to the place the person got off the bus. One good example is the PSTA Bus stop on Ulmerton Road by the PSTA Express terminal to Tampa. That is a death wish. It is not the stop directly along side the terminal, but the bus stop going the opposite direction. I did it once and never ever will I go to Tampa taking the PSTA.
Traffic signals is another joke. The signal gives a person about 35 seconds to cross a 6 lane hwy. Try that having to use a walker or cane. Again, I will not shop
in or near the store on Ulmerton REd & Seminole. Granted pedestrians have to be careful but should not be warned about crossing tn ihe dark Sometimes our work
forces us to travel in the twilight times or night hours. It s time to quit the blame game and make something happen.

Hopefully when the construction is done Ulmerton and Seminole will be better.

The funding was granted for sidewalks on Indian Rocks Road years ago but construction never commenced.

Sounds like a better use of our LOST finds than a walk around a retention pond by the volleyball courts.
