Obama Met by 11,000 Supporters at St. Pete College
On Saturday, St. Petersburg College hosted President Barack Obama, who spoke to more than 11,000 supporters
President Barack Obama spoke to more than 11,000 people Saturday at St. Petersburg College in Seminole, hoping to continue his momentum from the 2012 Democratic National Convention.
Obama told the crowd Saturday it is crucial the U.S. makes the right choice in November. "I honestly believe this is the clearest choice of any time in our generation," Obama said.
Obama, who after the Seminole event headed to Orlando, said it is important to keep Florida a blue state.
U.S. Sen. Bill Nelson, D-Florida, who also spoke at Saturday's campaign event, said if Obama secures Florida's 29 electoral votes, "That's the election."
He said Pinellas County and the I-4 corridor are the part of the state that would push Obama over the top to victory in November.
On Saturday, Obama reiterated many of his talking points from his acceptance speech at the Democratic National Convention.
He criticized Mitt Romney for not mentioning the troops during the Republican National Convention.
He slammed the GOP presidential candidate hard for not laying out his tax plan.
"They want your vote, but they don't want you to know their plans," Obama said. "… And that’s because all they’ve got left is the same prescription that they’ve had for 30 years.
"Tax cuts. Tax cuts. Cut a few regulations. More tax cuts," Obama added. "Tax cuts when times are good. Tax cuts when times are bad. Tax cuts to help you lose a few extra pounds. Tax cuts to help your love life."
He said strengthening the middle class and continuing their tax breaks is more important than the "top-down" approach that would give tax breaks to millionaires.
Straying from his speech on Thursday, Obama specifically mentioned the affordable care act. He said his opponents try to label it negatively as "Obamacare," but at least that name says he cares, he said.
"Mr. Romney says he is going to repeal it, so that means Romney (doesn't) care," Obama said.
Former Florida Gov. Charlie Crist introduced Obama Saturday. Crist's introduction was preceded by speeches from Congresswoman Kathy Castor and Nelson.

I am curious about your choice of Gov. Romney. Apparently you prefer the "you are on own" philosophy to "we are all in this together." That should work out well for you during the next natural disaster! Or perhaps there is something in Gov Romney's record that attracts you. Is it his outsourcing, job-killing record at Bain? Is it his implementation of RomneyCare in Massachusetts? (Opps, that is one of the many things we don't discuss such as his tax returns, previous pro-choice position. or what his plans for tax cuts and creating jobs are) Is it his failure to serve in the military during a war he supported in the 60's? Or perhaps you are so impressed with his (silent!) support of those who currently serve in the military? SWJ, are you really sure your eyes are wide open and actually focusing on reality?

For anyone to say that Romney is a job killer is ludicrous and a bunch of nonsense. Does anyone realize that the United Auto Workers has outsourced close to 2/3 of its employees? In the meantime, due to this wonderfully successful "bailout" of G.M., courtesy of the American taxpayer to the tune of $80 billion, G.M. is once again headed for bankruptcy and we the taxpayers could be on the hook for another $25.7 billion dollar "too big to fail" bailout which Obama wants to use as a successful model in helping future "private industries " who need a bailout. Solyndra , a "Green job" bankrupt company that created not even ONE job, left the taxpayer on the hook for over 1/2 a billion dollars. In the meantime, Romney saves businesses like Staples and Toys R Us, huge employers, that cost us taxpayers zip, nada, nunca.. I also think it is despicable that the military may not be able to vote in this year's election due to half of the overseas voting facilities either being shut down or out dated. And this is Obama's thank you very much to those who serve ourcountry and sacrifice so that we can be safe from harm?? Unbelievable!!!

Ms McAloon, you are way off base on GM; I continue to follow them from an investment perspective and your comment is speculative, and undoubtedly self-serving for political purposes.
As for your final grenade into the tents of your fellow Americans, our troops have every opportunity to cast absentee ballots, as they have done under every president in recent memory.
Furthermore, the Obama Administration has been more supportive of the needs of the troops - and, their families, which is very important for anyone who has ever deployed - than most Administrations.
I love those Presidents who spend oodles of bucks on hardware ships, planes, tanks, whatever - but then screw the troops themselves and their families. Obama is finally getting that personal support right.
As someone who himself deployed in war, and later retired in 1992 from the military, I am very sensitive to these needs; my military generation basically got screwed by the presidential administrations of the 60's, 70's and 80's.
But, I realize you are trying to smear President Obama, because you and some others posting here really, really hate him, and always have.

This is a story of a mentally unstable and very fertile woman. It's a bizarre tale that happened in the area where I live. I don't know how anyone can connect this spectacular story of copious childbearing in any particular way with President Obama. It's an anomalous situation, not something that commonly occurs.
What exactly do you think President Obama had to do with it?
Are you really so uncaring about all the children born of this fertile, irresponsible woman, who did not ask for the circumstances of their birth? What is your plan for them while this unstable woman is busy learning how to be a successful farmer?... and where is she to take some of this "plenty of empty acreage" you speak of "for her to build a house, do farming, growing vegetables, fruits, milk from a cow, eggs from a hen? Sell these things and make clothes and get into arts and crafts creating beautiful things and selling them???? Nice fantasy!!
Why is it that so many among the passionately political are so pro-fetus but anti-children? If you're going to make such a fuss about abortion, then you need to show a little more charitable attitude toward the children born and not aborted. Otherwise it seems completely hypocritical.

Wonderful.
And hey, who cares if Romney's vaunted "business experience" is illuminated by his longstanding stewardship of a predatory vulture capital firm that profited from slashing American companies and gutting out their innards for the immediate profit of himSELF and his well-connected friends, and then sending a substantial portion of his ill-gotten gains to Switzerland and the Cayman Islands (at least as far as we know from the one single complete tax return he ever bothered to show us) during a time when American troops were getting blown apart in Iraq and Afghanistan. That's your definition of trustworthiness and "patriotism", I gather? It sure isn't mine.

A woman's right to equal pay for equal work, for planning when to have children and for preventing breast cancer or cervical cancer are essential to her economic success. We can't speak of changing the "economic mess" (check out the graphs showing how much of the national debt is due to an unfunded war in Iraq and tax cuts for the wealthy under President Bush II.) without including these rights for women. Despite what Gov Romeny and Rep Ryan say, America is not in decline. And no one wants the country to be run by a hedge fund investor only interested in making money for himself and his investors without a detailed plan to create jobs rather than cut them.] or outsource them to foreign countries.

I did so. paid off my student loans with two jobs and eventually was successful. I am not sure that is an attitude common among young graduates (from technical schools, colleges, high schools, etc.) today who seem to expect instant financial success complete with new cars, apartments or houses, gym memberships and vacations! President Obama's student loan reforms which allow graduates to pay back student loans over 20 years based on actual income will be very helpful to those who are not in a position to (as Gov. Romney puts it) "borrow money from their parents" or just sell some of their stock to finance life in college. As individuals we are all entitled to our opinions and should vote the way we truly believe, but we should also respect the opinion of those that do not agree with us and not bash them for their views. The best way to make your point is through your vote.
The vitriol in many of these comments truly saddens me as an American. I am proud to stand among ALL people regardless of race, sexuality, religion, gender or political affiliation. We are first and foremost ALL members of the human race and while we may have differing opinions it should not come down to the always 'us vs them' mentality that has so divided our country more and more over the years.

Amid these rich (often informative) exchanges, it may be useful to appreciate what we bring to them. Broadly, this is knowing, opining, and believing. It is difficult to have a useful discussion where beliefs and opinions swamp and dilute possible common ground. There are things we can all "know" and agree on, that is, fact-based findings, empirical and observable reality. Minimally, this should be an area of indisputable agreement (unless and until new facts surface to shed new light on what we can know together). On the other hand, we all have opinions but it is insufficient (in a discussion) to say "that's my personal opinion" and I'm sticking with it. To be a USEFUL opinion worthy of respect as persuasive to convince others, one must have a reasoned scaffolding for support. It may not be enough to close the "persuasive" deal but at least it would merit listening and respect. Beliefs, for their part, are CHOSEN positions. If one believes in the supernatural, that is a choice and often non-negotiable. There is usually no convincing, reasoned argument that can shake what a person CHOOSES to believe. Beliefs are not fact-based and are generally not susceptible to wiggle room in the face of counter positions. Facts are facts but interpretation of facts may vary. Different interpretations would best be presented with informed (rational, fact-based) opinions. Examining facts through the lens of disparate, conflicting beliefs will never lead to consensus (on anything).

The Republican Party serves two extremes; the ultra-rich and the ultra-stupid. Any self-respecting middle-classer that isn’t fooled by shiny-things (all of this foolishness; men trying to figure how to legislate women’s bodies and what grown, consenting adults do in their bedrooms) needs the protections of labor and unions just to keep from working 80 hours a week and weekends for taskmasters like Mitt Romney for $6.25 an hour. Don't you get it? The super-rich have been shipping our jobs to the China and India for the past 30 years -- and all the GOP can do is sit around and spin the country into circles. I hear no solutions coming out of the GOP -- none -- just criticism over a problem that they created. What is this 5-point plan of Mitt Romney's to create 12-million jobs? He has not given a single detail. All he cares about is giving his rich buddies more tax breaks, when as it stands, they all stash their money in Switzerland and the Caymans like he does. I am amazed by the stupidity out here. The high-irony is: Right-wingers will gladly bow-down to an 'American company' like Wal-Mart, that has eviscerated American small business, and yet has the unmitigated gall to line its lobbies with pictures of dead American soldiers -- while they peddle Americans shoddy Chinese crap and high-fat, over-processed "food" made from pink slime. If you want to talk about financial strength, and the problems leading up to our current recession, look no further than the Republican Party as the root cause. Their insatiable lust for war, no doubt to protect the interests of big oil, hurled our economy into the toilet and ran up the national debt. Explain to me this: A party that shuns birth control, has a quote-unquote 'respect for life' and expects that brainless right-wing 'Christians' can just keep spitting out kids with no regard for the impact on society, and then turns around and asks, "Where are the jobs?" If the Republican Party was so 'fiscally conscious' it would embrace gay people rather than shun them. At least they are not dragging down the economic engine by giving the country more uneducated, home-schooled kids that don't know how to do much than sing 'The Army of the Lord' in four-part harmony and play the fiddle. It is time to wake-up, America.

Hey Kincade....you had me UNTIL this line...... "At least they are not dragging down the economic engine by giving the country more uneducated,.......... " What about all the kids born yearly to welfare recipients that everyone else has to foot the bill for, because no one has the balls to say "ENOUGH"!!!! If you want to talk about a drag to society - there you have it, plain and simple. I don't care what race, color, or otherwise - don't breed what you can't afford to feed! End of story.

Do the A-R-I-T-H-M-E-T-I-C....the congress under Bush 1 doubled the national debt and W quadrupled it. Then crashed the economy. Asked for and got a $787 Billion bailout and made bridge $20+ BILLION bridge loans to the "UNION stooges" at GM and Chrysler before BHO became president. Besides how do you have a convention without inviting your previous P, VP, SecDef, SecState, previous VPOTUS candidate or even mentioning them, I guess the party was just formed 3 1/2 years ago from the remnants of the Whigs....

Wow last I checked this was just a News post about our President coming to town and some people having a good time. Did any of you go to the event? The event is the story. I have noticed this on Yahoo also, a story about ice skating then the comment section filled with political hate and jabs back and forth. If you want a debate come on over to the story about the Dunedin laundry mat owner who tells PBO to "kiss her ass" on a sign in front of her business. That would seem a better place for this type of talk.

The Repubicans have painted a vague picture that the people collecting welfare and food stamps are fat black women with a bunch of kids, but in fact white people make up that picture by 64%.
