New Highland Recreation Complex on Track
The proposed new recreation center is on track for completion in May, according to the city.
With the walls around the pool gone, it's now easy to see the construction progress on the proposed new Highland Recreation Complex.
The recreation center should be complete in May of 2013, according to Facilities Manager Glenn Harwood.
Harwood said the construction process is going very well.
Within the next couple of weeks the building will have all of its walls and windows, so if it rains, the inside of the building will not get wet. Work continues on various systems such as electrical, plumbing, air-conditioning and duct-work, Harwood said.
Next steps on the new complex include site work, such as roads and parking, Harwood said.
The new 40,000-square-foot building will have an indoor walking track, double gymnasium, indoor play zone, exergaming fitness room, and more.
The Largo City Commission will consider the $89,711- purchase of the equipment for the exergaming fitness room on Dec. 4. The space will have interactive electronic games to promote physical activity, according to a city report.
The construction of the new recreation building began in May of 2012.

I still cannot understand why the commissioners allocated so much funds towards this project when other more important areas of the City, in my opinion, would better benefit. With the economy still tight and every school and city/county department downsizing why is this expensive project so important? There are many roads that need resurfacing and sidewalks repaired/replaced that I am sure Largo residents, including myself, would rather see accomplished. The Largo library was torn down and another very expensive one was built that is far from a popular place to go to. I am glad that Curtis Holmes is on the board to at least try to slow down this frivolous spending of hard earned funds.
