Largo Soldier's Family Moved by Community's Support

The community continues to show its support for fallen American hero and Indian Rocks Christian School grad, Matthew Sitton.

Friends and community members came to a scholarship fundraiser for the 9-month-old son of U.S. Army Staff Sgt. Matt Sitton at the Dairy Queen in Seminole on Aug. 28.

Sitton, 26, died Aug. 2 in Afghanistan; it was the third deployment for the Indian Rocks Christian School graduate and Largo native.

Matt Sitton's mom Cheryl Sitton says the community support has been "overwhelming" in a good way.

"I want people to know how deeply we have been moved by our community and how proud I am to be a part of this community," Cheryl Sitton said. "The people of Pinellas and Hillsborough have shown us what American pride is all about."

Matt's parents, Cheryl and Steve Sitton, said the community's love and their faith have helped get them through this difficult time.

Sitton's widow Sarah could not come to the fundraiser because she was up at Fort Bragg for a memorial service for Matt, his parents said.

All proceeds from the Aug. 28 event went to the memorial fund established for 9-month-old Brodey with UBS, 150 2nd Avenue N, St. Petersburg, FL 33701.
