Is Unemployment a Concern in Largo?
Florida’s unemployment rate was up to 8.8 percent in July after two consecutive months of staying at 8.6 percent.
While state officials continue to tout an improving climate on the jobs front, seasonally adjusted unemployment rates in Florida rose to 8.8 percent in July.
This, according to TBO.com, comes after two months of state unemployment rates staying at 8.6 percent. Both numbers are higher than the 8.3 percent natural average.
July’s numbers, however, are significantly lower than the 10.6 percent unemployment rate Florida logged in 2011, according to the federal Bureau of Labor Statistics. That agency lists several states with unemployment rates much higher than Florida’s. Those that top the list for July 2012 are:
- California, 10.7 percent
- Georgia, 9.3 percent
- Nevada, 12 percent
- Rhode Island, 10.8
- South Carolina, 9.6 percent
North Dakota has one of the lowest unemployment rates in the country at 3 percent.
“Month-to-month numbers are going to vary, but the long-term trend is positive," TBO quoted Lane Wright, Gov. Rick Scott's press secretary, as saying Friday.

A recession is when your neighbor has lost his/her job. A depression is when you have lost yours.
The unemployment rate is way higher than 8.8 %. So many people have stopped looking and are not counted in the percentage.
Also how many people are serving time in prisons. The numbers are staggering. They are not looking for work and if they were out probably could not find work.

Considering 3.5% of those currently unemployed are unable or choose not to work, it leaves approximately 5.3% that are "really" unemployed due to lay-offs, etc. Now, considering that, the REAL numbers of those employed are 94.7% This becomes very obvious when you pass by most shopping malls and restaurants or notice the hordes of traffic with people driving just to drive and waste money on fuel, spend time window shopping instead of doing something more productive and eating out instead of cooking at home, eating better and spending less. Ladies, stay home and make cookies. Men, stay home, paint and fix the door knobs.
