Indian Rocks Gift Shop Offers Great Deals, No Frills
Cady’s Corner has many items you can find at high-end shops, but for a fraction of the price.
Tucked away between a cobbler and a bagel shop in the Harbor Crest Shopping Center is a small gift shop that is worth checking out if you like trinkets and tchotchkes but don’t like paying top dollar for them.
But don’t expect to find fancy décor, decorative lighting and high-pressure salespeople — just a friendly man, his cute cat and plenty of good deals.
Cady’s Corner, owned by 63-year-old Bill Cady, is located at 12005 Indian Rocks Rd. next to St. Pete Bagel Co., and it’s the type of no-frills, diamond-in-the-rough place you might find at a flea market.
In fact, Cady opened the shop this year after spending the past five years selling his goods at the Oldsmar Flea Market.
“I worked for the Disabled American Veterans Association for 28 years before retiring in 1999,” said Cady, a former Marine who lost both his legs in Vietnam.
“I got so bored that I decided to open the shop at the flea market, and it started doing so well that I wanted to do something closer to home.”
In December Cady moved into a storefront four doors down from his current location in the plaza. But the space wasn’t conducive to his condition or his business, so he relocated to his current spot in June.
The shop specializes in souvenirs, animal figurines and handmade items like potholders and blankets, and many of the items not only can be found in higher end shops, but often at double the price.
“One guy came in and told me he saw something that he bought for $35 down on the beach and I sell it for $14. He was mad,” Cady said.
“People have said our prices on the fairy and dragon figurines are the lowest around, and those are very popular items,” he adds.
With wooden shelves, folding tables and casual carpeting, Cady’s Corner won’t be mistaken for a Hallmark or Things Remembered.
But thanks to a personable owner, great prices, and a shop cat named Pebbles, Cady’s Corner is a great place to go for a little conversation and a lot of terrific deals.
“I like it, I feel so much better since I’ve been doing it,” Cady said. “I enjoy talking to the people who come in here, and they enjoy playing with Pebbles.”
