How to Keep Your Pets Safe During a Storm
Emergency officials urge people to prepare for Tropical Storm Isaac and that includes making plans for your pets before, during and after the storm.
Plan Ahead for Your Pets:
Tampa Bay is included in the cone of uncertainty for Tropical Storm Isaac, according to the National Hurricane Center. That means, people in Largo are urged to prepare now by finding out your evacuation zone, building a disaster kit and making the appropriate plans for your pets.
Here are some tips from officials with Pinellas County Emergency Management.
Residents have to preregister for pet-friendly shelters because space is limited. Mobile home residents are given first priority. If you would like to register yourself and your pet, call (727) 582-2150 or download the registration form and fax it to:
Pinellas County Animal Services
12450 Ulmerton Road, Largo, FL 338774
Fax (727) 582-2637
There are three pet-friendly shelters in Pinellas County:
Thurgood Marshall Middle School
- 3901 22nd Ave S., St. Petersburg
Oak Grove Middle School
- 1370 S. Belcher Road, Clearwater
Dunedin Middle School
- 70 Patricia Ave., Dunedin
Check ahead and find kennels and pet-friendly hotels or motels in non-evacuation zones. The St. Petersburg/Clearwater Area Convention & Visitors Bureau has a list of pet-friendly hotels and motels. Call them at (727) 464-7200 or go to their website for more information.
