Fallen Largo Soldier Honored at Veterans Day Ceremony

Largo held its annual Veterans Day Ceremony on Sunday night in Largo Central Park.

A fallen American hero was honored at Sunday night's Veterans Day Ceremony in Largo.

Each year, Largo presents eagle statues to a couple Largo City employees who have served in the military as a part of its annual Veterans Day Ceremony in Largo Central Park.

This year the city also included the family of U.S. Army Staff Sgt. Matt Sitton in the presentation of the eagle statues. Sitton's parents, widow and toddler son attended the ceremony.

The Largo native was 26 when he died Aug. 2 in Afghanistan; it was the third deployment for the Indian Rocks Christian School graduate.

The city employees who also received the eagles honoring and appreciating their military service were Largo Police Lt. Mike Loux and Largo Asst. Fire Chief Doug Swartz.

Sunday's ceremony opened with the presentation of colors by the Largo Police and Fire Honor Guard. The ceremony also included keynote speaker Lt. Colonel Norma Vargus, Largo Mayor Patricia Gerard and special music.

Veterans Day was originally known as Armistice Day and marked the first anniversary of the end of World War I. The national holiday began in 1938 and the holiday became known as Veterans Day in 1954. Veterans Day honors all who have served in the military.

Veterans Day is Nov. 11, but because the holiday fell on a Sunday this year, some government offices commemorate the holiday on Monday, Nov. 12.
