City Commission Will Weigh in on New Recreation Center

Tonight's city commission meeting covers plans for the new Highland Recreation Complex, a new West Bay Drive McDonald's and more.

The Largo City Commission will consider changes to the design of the proposed, new Highland Recreation Complex tonight.  Project designers will share several modifications to the proposed building's design to keep the project within budget.

Proposed changes to the recreation complex plans include moving the party rooms from the second floor to the first floor and eliminating a second floor deck.

If the commission gives its approval, the plan is to start construction on the new building May 2. The new building would be substantially complete by May 8, 2013, according to city plans.

The Largo City Commission will consider plans for a new McDonald's restaurant at 1250 West Bay Drive. McDonald's hopes to build a new 4,365 square-foot restaurant with side-by-side drive-throughs.

The proposed new McDonald's would be one-story. But the current development regulations require the building of two-story structures at this locale unless the city commission grants an exemption.

Other Items:

• The city commission will consider changing the trespass law to make it easier to issue trespass warnings on city property.

• The city commission may approve $67,100 for paving Ridge Road NW between 4th Avenue NW and Lake Villa. The road is within a community redevelopment target area.

• The city commission will discuss allowing the sale of alcohol in some industrial parts of town that have existing commercial development.

• The city commission will discuss waiving some development impact fees based on recommendations made recently by the Community Redevelopment Advisory Board. The goal is to encourage residential development

Ceremonial: Largo will honor several police officers and a firefighter. Michael Blickensdorf, Nicholas Cusumano, Jeffrey Losinski, Lance Wagoner, and Dianne LaFrance will receive distinguished service medals from the police department. Telecommunicator Adam Usher will get the lifesaving medal. Nicole Dobbins will be recognized as the firefighter of the year.

Plus, April is Water Conservation month in Florida and April 22 is Earth Day.

Tonight's Largo City Commission meeting starts at 6 p.m. at City Hall, 201 Highland Avenue NE.
